In this particular case, all citizens travelling from the European Union need their passport and identity card only in order to enter Portugal.

 

Nevertheless, if visitors are planning to remain in the country for a period longer than three months, a special visa is required.

 

Other citizens that do not need a visa to visit the country are those from the United States, Canada, New Zealand, Argentina, Portugal, Chile, Uruguay, Mexico, Costa Rica, Ecuador and Israel.

 


How to travel by Air

There are a large number of possibilities available in order to travel to Portugal by air. Nevertheless to arrive at The Algarve specifically, flights bound for Faro Airport must be taken.

 

The main airlines that operate flights to this destination are Air Portugal, Portugalia and TAP. All of them connect Faro with Oporto and with Lisbon on a daily basis.

 

Once in Faro Airport, there are buses available to the city center, which is located about eleven kilometers away.

 

Taking a taxi is recommended as well.

There are transport companies that offer direct bus services to destinations that are not covered by trains.

 

One of the possibilities are the operators of private character, in addition to transport, offer other services like bathroom, video, air conditioned and included snacks.

 


There is the national network of Rodoviária Nacional (RN), and competing private operators run services on the most popular routes. Despite being slower, the price of these services is cheaper.

 

For most of the companies in both cases, private operators and the national network, tickets must be bought in advance and travelers must be properly informed about the services that are being paid for.


How to travel by Land Algarve

By Car

 

For visitors traveling by car is recommended that they do it through Spain given that the distance is quite short and the traffic is light. The easiest way is traveling from Extremadura up to the frontier line in Badajoz.

 

However, this area has easy access from other areas of Spain as well such as the city of Tuy in Pontevedra, Fuente de Oñoro in Zamora, the city of Rodrigo in Salamanca or Ayamonte in Huelva.

 

If travelling from Lisbon, highway A2 must be followed or the IC1. The later one is free. The Ayamonte-Huelva highway in Spain links Cordoba, Seville and Madrid with The Algarve.

How to travel by Railway

It is possible to travel to The Algarve by Railway from Madrid, through the well known train Talgo Lusitania.

 

There are regular services to the station of Lisbon Santa Apolonia. Moreover, the well known Spanish Railway Network (RENFE) runs services from Spain as well.

 

Also, the Portuguese railway system "Caminhos de Ferro Portuguese" (CP), which is state-owned, is available here as well. It offers comfortable services and runs trains within the country.

 

Caminhos de Ferro Portuguese offers daily international connections: Lisbon-Porto-Paris; Lisbon-Madrid; Porto-Vigo; Lisbon-Badajoz.
