Arequipa city is located in the south west area of Peru, and it is the capital city of the province bearing the same name. Nowadays, Arequipa is regarded as the country's second most important city, after the capital city.


Arequipa is also popularly known as "Cuidad Blanca" (White City) due to the color of the lava produced by the Misti and Chachani volcanoes, called ashlars. Also, some people call it the American Rome, given that people in Arequipa are highly religious and a vast number of churches can be found here.


Its Italian and Spanish Baroque architecture features stunningly beautiful houses that date from the vice royalty's and republican times.


Not only during the republican period but also nowadays, this city has always been the country's second most important one. Finally, very varied and exotic food can be tasted in Arequipa.

Sightseens & Tours in Arequipa

Among the many attractions this city has to offer, the colonial buildings located in the historic centre are some of the main ones. Such buildings are made from ashlars stone, a white volcanic stone very commonly found in the area.


The Moral House, Tristan del Pozo's House, Iberry's House, Pastor's House and Goyeneche's House are some of the ones that can be visited.


In addition, there are other interesting monuments to visit such as the absolutely beautiful Santa Catalina Monastery, the Company of Jesus Church, the Yanahuara viewpoint, the Sabandia mills or the Sachaca viewpoint.


Other well worth visiting places are Andagua, the Imata Stone Forest, Cotahuasi, the Sumbay Caves and Stone Forest, the Salinas and Aguada Blanca National Reserves, the Colca Valley and Yura.

Climate in Arequipa

A broad diversity of climates is one of Arequipa's main features. Thus, warm and mild areas and areas with heavy snowfalls can be found here.


In the coastal areas the climate is warm mainly, with few rains and quite humid. Towards the two thousand meters of height the climate becomes mild and there is a sharp difference between day and night.


Moreover, in the high punas the temperature drops significantly, reaching the 0C during the warmest month. It snows quite frequently, especially during July and August.
