National Pantheon of Heroes
|
|
Originally built as a chapel, this building was commissioned by president Francisco Solano López in 1863 who dedicated it to the virgin Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, patron saint of the city.
The building was finally inaugurated in 1936 as a piece of work aimed to honor the virgin and Mariscala and its army.
The chapel contains the tombs of Mariscal López and other heroes of national history and since then it is known as the National Pantheon of Heroes.
Located between Independencia Nacional and Coronel Bogado, this symbol of the Paraguayan religious history challenges the deep changes and ruptures that have occurred throughout the years.
Although it was initially very similar to the gothic churches that can be found in Spain, Asuncion's cathedral was remodeled and underwent considerable modifications.
This monument began to be built in the XIV century, in the place where Asuncion's most ancient monument, Christ's Chapel or Crypt stood and it was almost completely destroyed in a big fire that broke out in 1914.
Nowadays, the Mausoleum of Menendez Pelayo (made by Victorio Macho) can be enjoyed here and facing the cathedral stands a monument to the first governor of the Rio de la Plata, Domingo Martinez de Irala.

According to important historians, it was in the Independence House of Asunción where the successful revolution of May 1811 broke out.
By then, this house, built in 1772, was property of the Sáenz brothers, who decided that it could be used as a meeting place to develop strategies against the Spanish.
In 1961, such house was remodeled and began to work as a place of conservation and exhibition of relics, documents and objects that survived revolution.
