Brasilia Tourist Information

Brasilia, capital city of Brazil, is located 950 kilometers northeast from Rio de Janeiro. This city was built in order to transfer the capital city from the coast to the midwestern interior of the country and curb the tendency for cities to be located in the country's coast exclusively.

Lucio Costa was the principal urban planner and most of the main buildings were created by architect Oscar Niemeyer. Moreover, Roberto Burle Marx was in charge of the landscaping.

The city's shape resembles an airplane that faces the south. Lucio Costa, however, claims that it was planned to be in the shape of a cross.

Given that the land was quite arid and inhospitable, a dam was constructed in the area as soon as the city began to be built.

Together with Putrajava, Brasilia is one of the most recently built capital cities in the world. This city is the seat of the Brazilian government and the national president's official residence is located here as well.

A number of embassies and other highly important international buildings are located in Brasilia. Finally, it was listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1987.

Broad avenues are one of the city's main features, and together with public buildings they encircle a number of neighborhoods known as "supercuadras". As the name implies, these neighborhoods consist of large blocks of buildings.

At the central part of the complex, the Praça dos Três Poderes (Square of the Three Branches) is located, where the Palácio do Planalto, seat of the Executive branch, the Congresso Nacional (National Congress), seat of the Legislative Branch; and, finally, the Palácio da Justiça ("Palace of Justice"), seat of the Supreme Federal Court are found.
