What is more, sport lovers can enjoy a wonderful day as well since it is possible to do water sports including wind surf and to go fishing or to play golf, mini golf and tennis.

 

Cartagena de Indias is an ideal place for man to get back to nature. One striking example of this is the Rosario Islands, nowadays fauna and flora sanctuary, an excellent place to watch carefully how the marine ecosystem works.

 

In addition, it is highly recommendable to visit the Botanical Garden, where a huge number of plant species typical from the area can be admired among colors, scents and springs.

The Cathedral

The Basilica Menor, better known as the Cathedral, began to be built in 1575, to replace the old one, which was made out of wood and cane.

 

Therefore, this cathedral has become one of the oldest ones in the American continent.

 

In 1586 it was severely damaged after suffering an attack led by Francis Drake, the pirate who decided to blow part of the building up in order to rescue the city that he had occupied.

 

As time went by, the building had to deal with other problems such as sudden collapses. But in 1612 the works were finally finished. Nowadays the cathedral stands waiting for curious people who wish to visit it.

Inquisition Palace

This Palace, set up in the city in 1610, is one of most significant constructions of civil architecture from the XVIII century in Cartagena.

 

This building used to be the Inquisition Tribunal See, so if we go round the different sectors we will find the rooms that used to work as torture chambers and jails.

 

Heretics from the respective district would be imprisoned and tortured there. In this case, from the Islas de Barlovento, the Nuevo Reino de Granada y Venezuela, Santo Domingo, Nicaragua and Panama.

 

In 1811 the independence movement was set up and the Holy Office was thrown out from Cartagena de Indias. Nevertheless, the inquisitors returned four years later and remained in the country until 1821.

Castillo San Felipe de Barajas (Castle)

Taking into account all the buildings that are part of the New World, the Castillo de San Felipe (a castle named San Felipe) is the largest one.

 

When it was built, in 1536, it was not as large as nowadays. However, as time went by it had to be extended to satisfy new needs and even its original name, Castillo de San Lorenzo, was changed to obtain the current one.

 

The Castle has a great main entrance and a porter’s lodge. Also, there is a parade ground, a Santa Barbara and a well, underground galleries, gunpowder stores, gun emplacements among other interesting features.

 

Bocachica Beach

Bocachica can be defined as one of the most picturesque villages located near Cartagena de Indias.

 

It was name after the small Canal de Bocachina (Bocachina Channel). Such channel used to be the only access route to Cartagena de Indias when the one of Boca Grande on the other side of Tierrabomba was not available.

 

After a forty five minute journey we will arrive at Bocachica by means of fluvial transport. Here, the beaches are wonderful and low and water is crystal clear.

Plaza de Toros (Bullring)

The modern Plaza de Toros in Cartagena is one of the most popular attractions in the city and another important part of the national heritage and the history of the area.

 

This bullring was inaugurated in January 1974 by Joselillo de Colombia, and Antonio José Galán and Francisco Ruiz Miguel with animals from Vistahermosa. Since then, the wooden row of balconies has always been its most attractive feature.

 

This bullring is said to be one of the most beautiful ones in America. Its attractive architectural model forms the shape of a queen’s crown.

Plaza de los Coches (Square)

Commonly known by the name Plaza de los Coches, this square is located in the heart of Cartagena de Indias city and its original name used to be “Plaza del Juez”.

 

However, before acquiring its current name, this square was known by others, such as Plaza del Esclavo, since it used to work as a point of sale of black people who arrive from Africa to become slaves.

 

It was not until 1585 that this last name would be changed. In that year this place began to be known by the name Plaza de Mercaderes since a large number of merchants could be found here.

 

Another name given to this square was Plaza de la Yerba. Finally, it obtain the name Plaza de los Coches because it is possible to park the car opposite the Gate.
