Inca Trail, Cusco Peru

The Inca Trail covers about 42 kilometers, starting on kilometer 88 of the railway. This hiking route leads visitors through amazing paths and archaeological remains arriving on the fourth day during the morning to Machu Picchu city.


This trail is part of the extensive Inca route system, which consists of more than 23,000 kilometers that connected the areas of the Tawantinsuyo Empire which covered southern Colombia, the west area of Brazil, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia up to the center of Chile and the north of Argentina.

The Sanctuary, the route and the Inca ruins

The world's most picturesque route, surrounded by extraordinary natural beauty, breathtaking landscapes, mountains, glacier water courses, forests, ravines, precipices, carved rock paths, a long flight of stairs made of stone with hundreds of steps which must be ascended and descended and wonderful archaeological remains strategically located.


Some of the places that will be visited are: Qorihuayrachina located 2498 meters above sea level, Llactapata at 2600 masl, Wayllabamba at 3000 masl, Runkurakay at 3700 masl, Sayacmarca at 3580 masl, Phuyupatamarca at 3530 masl, Wiñayawayna at 2644 masl and finally, before arriving at Machu Picchu, Intipunku at 2347 masl.

Climate and Height

Climate in this area is mild all year long, rainy from November to March and warm and dry from April to October. Hence, it highly recommended having this great adventure during the dry season.

 

The annual average temperature varies from 20.4°C to 26.6°C. In some places we reach a height of 4500 meters above sea level.

What is required to go on this journey

To go on this journey we must take a tent, sleeping bag, some warm clothes, torch, raincoat, strong and light footwear, lighter, water (small courses are found along the route), non perishable food, sweets and photo camera.


We must be physically fit since we will walk all day long with our rucksacks, stopping only to eat and rest.


This way, we will cover all the journey in three days, catching sight of the Machu Picchu Inca ruins on the fourth day during the morning. As we will arrive early, we will be able to enjoy the ruins, its landscapes and history for almost the whole day. Tourist guides are avaialble in Cusco, who could look after the luggage and arrange the food for us.


The images and feelings that we will experience in this sanctuary will remain forever in our memories.
