Tourist information about Guatemala

Located in Guatemala department, Guatemala is the capital city of the country bearing the same name. Due to its stunning beauty and the perfect harmony this city has achieved, Guatemala is nowadays one of Latin America's most attractive cities.

The city is located in a mountain valley known as "Valle de la Ermita" and the mountain range and four volcanoes that can be found here, namely Agua, Acatenango, Pacaya and Fuego are some of the area's main features.

Another noticeable feature of this city is the fact that it is divided into fifteen areas. One example of these divisions is the "Zona Viva" and "Zona 13". Both areas successfully combine the old colonial style with some modern and cosmopolitan aspects.

In the heart of the city centre or "Zona Viva", known also as "Zona 10" a wide variety of hotels and restaurants can be found as well as a bustling nightlife.

In Zone 13 most of the city's typical museums can be found such as the Museo de Arqueología y Etnología (archaeological museum) and the Museo del Niño. Also, the well-known Crafts market can be visited here.

Moreover, the city's cultural heritage and local folklore make the city even more beautiful and picturesque. Among the city's cultural icons, legends such as El Cadejo and La Llora are some of the main ones.

History of Guatemala

It took 200 years for Guatemala to finally settle in the area where is found nowadays. In former times, the country's capital city used to be located in another locality. Given the proximity to volcanoes, earthquakes were extremely frequent in this area.

When a severe earthquake hit the area in 1773, moving the capital city in another place became an imperative. From that moment on, people had to face the great challenge of starting afresh in another place.

Once the city was settled in a different place, it acquired the official name of "La Nueva Guatemala de la Asunción" and soon the first buildings began to be built.

Not only were the buildings at this city particularly numerous, but also very artistic. The city began to grow, hawking became popular and several businesses were set up.

Nowadays, a broad variety of monuments to heroes, important people and eminent writers, stand at this city and are very well preserved. It is highly reccomeded to visit any of these sights stepped in history.
