Relief Map

The well known relief map of Guatemala is a unique engineering masterpiece created in 1904 by Francisco Vela.

 

This work consists of a scale relief map of Guatemala that shows the country's topography in detail. It is an open-air public monument and covers one thousand eight hundred square kilometres.

 

In order to create this map, Engineer Vela went around the national territory on foot and horseback to make the necessary calculations and grasp the country's different features and geography.

Miguel Angel Asturias Cultural Centre

This cultural centre, known by its complete name Centro Cultural Miguel Ángel Asturias, is a must for art lovers and people who enjoy fine architecture.

 

A number of biuldings that successfully combine architecture and art can be visited in this cultural center, which is located in the city's civic center.

 

Strikingly beautiful murals created by outstanding exponents of Guatemalan plastic arts can be found here.

 

What is more, there are other interesting facilities in this cultural centre such as an opera house, an open-air theatre, among others. Also, a museum were old weapons can be found as well as conference rooms and rehearsal spaces.

National Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology

Founded in 1931, the "Museo Nacional de Arqueología y Etnología" (National Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology) used to be located in El Calvario church. In 1946 the museum was relocated in a different place and it still works there nowadays.

 

The museum's main aim is to protect and preserve the Guatemalan heritage regarding archaeology and ethnology.

 

As its name implies, the museum is divided into two main areas. While one of these areas is devoted mainly to archaeology, the other one is devoted to ethnology.

 

La Aurora Zoo

La Aurora Zoo is another chief attraction in Guatemala city, especially for children. Nevertheless, grown ups can hugely enjoy themselves here as well while visiting a wide range of animals.

 

This place is home to an exciting variety of animal species that represent the country's wildlife and their natural habitat.

 

Several services are offered within the zoo such as comfortable places to have lunch, shops and spacious play areas for children.

Kaminal Juyu Site

In the heart of Guatemala City, in a residential area known as "Zona Siete", a notable archaeological site and former site of the Maya civilization known as Kaminal Juyú can be found.

 

This settlement was the greatest one in the Guatemalan Altiplano during the Preclassic period. About fifty thousand people used to live in this ancient city, where nowadays only the remains of this site can be found, including interesting ruins and historical heritage.

 

More than three hundred graves have been found among the Kaminal Juyú ruins as well as a variety of sculptures, pottery, and even thirteen Maya ball games.
