Itaipu Reservoir

Egypt pyramid, suspension gardens of Babilonia, Artemisa temple, Statue of Zeus in the Olimpo, Coloso of Rodas, lighthouse of Alejandría and the Mausoleum of Halicarnaso.

These constructions were selected as the seven wonders of the antique world by the greek Antípater in the 240 year a.c.

After 2.235 years, in 1995 the North American Association of civil engineers chooses the seven marvelous of the modern world.

Specialists of the five continents considered the golden Gate bridge, the Panama channel, the Euro tunnel, the Empire State building, the National Canadian tower, the project of control of water of the North sea and a project that is a proud for the Brazilians and Paraguayans: the Binational hydroelectric reservoir of Itaipu, the biggest in the world of energy production.

Situated on the Paraná River in Foz do Iguazu, Itaipú has become as a world reference in the use of the fluvial waters to generate electricity. Its turbines produce 25% of the energy that is consumed in Brazil and 95% in Paraguay.

Synonym of gigantism, its numbers causes impression. To have an idea, the exact volume of concrete used in the construction of the reservoir could be used to build 210 stadiums like the Maracaná, while the iron and the steel used would be enough to build 380 times the Eiffel Tower.

As Energy Supplier

What concerns to the generation of energy the results of the hydroelectric are not minors. Itaipu has a capacity of 12.600 megawatts, potency divided in 18 generating units.

In the year that celebrates 30 years of the signature of the treaty, Itaipú is working in the installation of two new turbines that, added to the 18 actual ones, are going to expand the potency of the reservoir up to 14 millions of kilowatts; this will prevent Brazil of having any kind of power cuts.

The lake that provides water to the reservoir has 170 kilometers of extension and 29 billions of cubic meters of water, idea of the militars that resulted in floods and and killed a natural wonder, the “Salto de las Siete Caídas”, of Guaíra.

To compensate the visitors of Foz won an attraction. Meeting Itaipú is discovering a story where more than 40 thousand people worked per day and night in order to dominate the rough water of the Paraná river.

Besides, in the Waterfalls, the water is protagonist of another spectacle in the interior of the reservoir. When the door is opened, the flow is 40 times superior to the volume of water thrown by the Cataratas of the Iguazú River.

Visiting Itaipú is also a testimony of the capacity of the human beings to reach the impossible. Work without comparison in the world engineering, the hydroelectric that started in 1975 can be contemplated as a monument to the creative talent of the humanity in the XX century.

To attend the number of visitors, Itaipú made an important high inversion in the touristic complex. The direction of the hydroelectric in the first month of the 2003 reformed the Center of Reception of Visitors and the reservoir has obtained attractions, such as night illumination.
