The White Crist

Inaugurated in the year 1987, the well known White Christ is located in the Huaynarroque Hill and it is, nowadays, one of the place's major attractions, offering a breathtaking view of the city.

By tradition, people go up to this place during the Holy Week, arriving first at the Espinal Hill (in order to pick up the thorns) and afterwards continue climbing to the White Christ, where a small sanctuary is found and sacrificial offerings can be made.

Santa Catalina Church

This temple, known as Santa Catalina Church, has a classical and lancet architecture with flashing ornaments.

This church began to be built in the year 1649 and it was not finished until a hundred and twenty-five years later. It is made of stone and ashlars, materials that can be found only in Arequipa.

The means of communications then were not as developed as nowadays. Hence, it is highly likely that animals or even natives themselves had to pull the loads.

Initially, this building was meant to be named Santa Cecilia Church. However, due to the enormous help provided by a woman called Catalina, the church is nowadays known by her name. Moreover, it pays tributes to the natives from the mines.

Las Calceteras Gallery

This gallery is located in the Bolognesi Square, in a place where knitted garments, sweaters, furs, and clothing made of sheep's or alpaca's wool, among others, can be found.

It is hardly surprising that these kinds of garments are very popular in Juliaca, given that they are ideal to keep warm during the winter frosts that set in between May and June.
