COPACABANA

History of Copacabana City

Copacabana city has been for a long time largely synonymous to Aymara Culture, given that Aymara people occupied this area for centuries, until the Inca Empire settled here.

During that period, between the year 1100 B.C. and the year 1400 B.C. this region was known as Kolla or Qulla and finally as Aymara. Fishing and agriculture were the main activities.

In the early thirteenth century, confrontation between the Aymaras and the Incas began to take place. The Aymaras were defeated and its governor, Chucho Capac was executed. It was after Tupac Inka Yupanqui arrived that the Inca empire was firmly established.

Tupac Inka is believed to be responsible for the foundation of the city and it was him who turned the Isla del Sol (Sun Island) into an important religious center. His empire did not crumble until the Spanish settlers arrive in the area in the year 1534.
