Lima`s History

It could be said that Lima's history began in 1500, but, more precisely, on the 18th January 1535 when founded by its conqueror Pizarro.

Pizarro decided to call the city "Cuidad de Reyes" (King's City). Many explanations have been provided for this, though still today it is not very clear why he chose such name.

Before becoming the capital of the Viceroyalty of Peru, it was a first class religious place of worship. Nevertheless, the city flourished during the Colonial times.

It was then when development took place and remarkable progress was achieved in Lima, reaching its greatest splendor. New palaces and impressive mansions became the city's main features.

What is more, the luxury and prosperity of the nobility made Lima the richest among all colonies.

During the Independence period, Lima gave to Nation a great number of illustrious patriots that shed their blood and gave their talent for the freedom. Among these were Don Pablo de Olavide, Jose Baquijano y Carrillo, Jose Olaya and Jose Bernardo Alcedo, author of the National Anthem.
