Peru's Main Square is another of the many creations of Francisco Pizarro. Should a definition of it be given, this square may well be described as the heart of the city.
Located in Lima's historic centre, this square is surrounded by the Palace of Government, the Viceroy's Palace, the Cathedral and the Municipality of Lima which used to work as the Town Council.
The Creole essence is one of the square's main features. A bronze fountain, crowned by the Angel of Fame holding a flag bearing both Lima's and the King's coat of arms in its right hand and a clarion in its left hand, can be enjoyed in this place.
Lima's Main Square has witnessed some of the most important historic events and celebrations in Peru, especially during colonial times.
In former times, people used to gather here in order to celebrate or complete public processions. Also, acts of faith promoted by the Holy Inquisition, such as auctions and selling of expropriated goods were held here as well.
