Aconcagua Provincial Park in Mendoza

The Aconcagua (6962 metres above mean sea level), America’s highest mountain, is located in the Aconcagua Provincial Park, in Mendoza Province (Argentina). The ideal time to ascend such mountain is from December to March.


In order to enter the Aconcagua Provincial Park a special personal permit is required. Such permit can be obtained at the Tourist Information Centre.


Entering to the park with the permit means that The Natural Renewable Resources Office and Mendoza Province’s Government are not to be held responsible for any accident that could happen within the park. Moreover, through the permit we to comply with the park’s regulations.


The Aconcagua Provincial Park consists of two main areas, Horcones Valley and Aconcagua Mount, according to the events that take place.  


Horcones Valley

 

This area is intended for tourist and recreational activities mainly.

ACONCAGUA PARK

It is possible to access the park by car up to the Horcones Valley’s parking place. Moreover, it is possible to go by bicycle up to the Durazno Valley. In order to camp, a camping permit is required. Moreover, the camping area faces the watchmen’s hut.


Aconcagua Mount

 

This area is intended for sport events in general, such as trekking and mountain climbing. The place’s topography allows the development of pedestrian paths, camps and recreational activities.


Transit Camps

 

These campsites are mostly aimed at mountain climbers and visitants who wish to ascend mountains or go trekking. Within the Quebrada de los Horcones three camps can be found: firstly, Quebrada del Durazno (3000 metres above sea level), secondly, Confluencia (3500 metres above sea level and Ibañez Refugee (3800 metres above sea level). Moreover, within the Quebrada del Rio Vacas: Pampa de Leñas campsite (2850 metres above sea level) and Casa de Piedra campsite can be found.


Base Camps

 

Base camps are campsites set up at the foot of the Aconcagua Mountain where climbers can rest. The most popular base camps are Plaza Francia (4250 metres above sea level) and Plaza De Mulas (4300 metres above sea level) which is diveded into three areas: Plaza De Mulas Inferior, Nueva Plaza De Mulas and Plaza De Mulas Refugee with its annex camp. A heliport, guards and medical services are available here.


High Camps

 

These campsites aimed at mountaineers who ascend the Aconcagua, where they can rest and restore their water supply. Along the Northwest Route the following campsites can be found: Plaza Canadá (4910 metres above sea level), Cambio de Pendiente (5200 metres above sea level), Nido de Cóndores (5380 metres above sea level), Berlín (5780 metres above sea level), Piedras Blancas (6030 metres above sea level) and Indepencia (6400 metres above sea level)


Along the Glaciar de los Polacos Route the following campsites are found: Campo I (4900 metres above sea level) and Campo II (5800 metres above sea level). The route known as Pared Sur (South Wall) proves highly risky and it is important to be fully aware of the fact that the rescue service of Mendoza’s police unit does not operate here. Neither does in Glaciar de los Polacos route.


The park’s guards patrol the area. During peak seasons guards are posted in the Quebrada de Horcones and Quebrada del Río Vargas campsites and the medical service is available at the Plaza de Mulas and Plaza Argentina base camps. During low seasons a paramedic and a doctor will be available at Plaza de Mulas campsite.
