Foundation Area Museum in Mendoza

Located in the heart of the historical area of the city, where the Mendoza’s Town Council used to work, on the Pedro del Castillo square, the Historical Museum can be found.

Inside the museum, an underground chamber containing archaeological remains of Mendoza’s Cabildo (Town Council), largely destroyed by an earthquake on the 20th of March 1861, as well as the remains of the Town Slaughterhouse and the Fruit and Vegetables Market can be visited.

The capitular rooms’ floors, made of Creole tiles, and the sheet of asphalt and red tiles corresponding to the slaughterhouse and the fruit market, respectively, can be clearly appreciated.

There are dioramas, photographs and scale models that recreate the history and evolution of the city, among other artefacts on exhibition at the museum, as well as objects extracted in situ, which date from the times of the great earthquake.

Wine Museum in Mendoza

In the district of Maipú, 16 kilometres away from the capital city of Mendoza, stands the Wine Museum. Such museum belongs to La Rural Winery and it is unique in South America owing to its features and the elements that can be found there.

A brief tour around the museum’s facilities is enough to learn about the ways of producing wine, from former times to the present day. What is more, a wine tasting session of a special varietal is usually held at the wine bar for tourists to enjoy the excellent wines.

As we visit the museum’s varied rooms, the guide tells us the epic story of don Felipe Rutini, an Italian who decided to settle down in Maipú in the year 1885, and planted the first vines where La Rural was to be set up some time later.
