Mexico City (in Spanish: Ciudad de Mexico), which is also the Federal District (Distrito Federal in Spanish, and hence the abbreviation D.F.) or simply Mexico, is in fact the capital city of the United Mexican States and the most important economic, political and cultural center in the country.
Located in the area where the Texcoco Lake used to be, in central-South Mexico, more precisely in the central plateau, Mexico city is one of the world's largest cities when it comes to its population and area.
The metropolitan area, including the Federal District and the Estate of Mexico, has a population of about eighteen million.
The Metropolitan area incorporates sixteen delegations of the Federal District, fifty eight adjacent municipalities of Mexico State and one municipality of the state of Hidalgo according to the most recent definition agreed upon members of government.
Given that Mexico is such a large city, a number of microclimates can be found here. These vary from one area to another and show a wide range of features.
Nevertheless, in general terms, the climate of Mexico City can be described as follows: the north area has an arid climate while the south area has a humid climate and is covered in thick vegetation. Moreover, the forests dominate the landscapes in the west area and the east area has a mild climate.

History of Mexico City |
Founded in 1325, under the Aztec name Tenochtitlan, Mexico city used to be an early rural settlement located in an islet.
As time went by, this old Aztec capital of the XVI century, with its access routes and typical canals, was rebuilt and became a city, between 1521 and 1523. Unknowingly, the city was getting ready to become the headquarters of the Viceroyalty of New Spain.
Despite the city being rebuilt, some features were preserved, such as the original road network and the indigenous neighborhoods San Juan Moyotla, Santa Maria Tlaquechiucan, San Sebastian Atzacualco and San Pedro Teopan.
Later, due to the extinction of Texcoco Lake added to the works aimed at creating a water drainage system that began during the mid XVI century, the city lost much of its rural character.
As soon as the country gained independence, Mexico city became the seat of government of the new nation, and significant changes were introduced: all the coats of arms that were in the city were destroyed and due to the Reform all the convents disappeared.
Since then, the variety and contrasts regarding the city's architecture, government and cultures have become the major feature of this capital city.
