By Car of by Bus
Although some might found the journey by car utterly complicated, others might enjoy it as an adventure. There are three main access routes.
One possibility is through Arequipa, traveling along the Pan-American route and taking the link route of Uchumayo until arriving at Arequipa. Afterwards, the new route of Santa Lucia must be followed in order to arrive at Juliaca and Puno.
A further possibility is through Desaguadero, taking the south Pan-American route in first place until arriving at Moquegua and afterwards taking the Binational route going by Mazo Cruz taking between four and five hours.
Finally, it is possible to access Puno through Cusco; from the Imperial city to the south along the Sicuani-La Raya-Ayaviri-Juliaca route. The ideal thing would be to set off early from Cusco, have lunch in Sicuani and arrive at Juliaca at four o'clock in the afternoon.
By train
Not only is this an available option to access Puno but also it is the most picturesque one, considering the journey and the beautiful landscape.
In both cities train stations from the Peru Rail Company can be found and in both cases the stations are located in the city centre.
The distance covered is of three hundred and ninety kilometers approximately.
