The journey along Atuel River and Valle Grande (Big Valley) is a must in San Rafael. Hence, it is hardly surprising that 90% of the tourists that arrive here decide to visit this attraction.
It is possible to start from San Rafael, from the Balloffet Avenue and then take the RP 173 heading Valle Grande. There, the wooded broad streets turn into winding paths.
The enclosing mountains are the true protagonists of this tour. In an area where almost no vegetation can be seen, surrounded by mountains, the Atuel River flows.
The Atuel rises in the Valle de Las Leñas (Las Leñas Valley) and runs parallel to the RP 173. In this area, an important tourist infrastructure can be found, including huts, hotels, campings, adventure holiday agencies and tourist shops.
This place proves ideal for doing risky sports such as rafting, kayak, mountain bike, mountaineering, rappelling, horse riding, among others.
Moreover, a dike has been built along the river, with walls as high as 115 meters from where breathtaking views can be enjoyed.
Until the reservoir of Valle Grande, a huge emerald water mirror that covers an area of about five hundred hectares, the road is paved.
In this great lake it is possible to do some sports such as swimming, water ski, rowing, diving, windsurf and even sail in a catamaran.
