The history of San Salvador can be traced to 1545 when Los Confines Royal Court decided that the city was to be rebuilt in the Zalcoatitan Valley.
It was then when the map of San Salvador was drew, locating in the heart of the city the Main Square, nowadays known as the Libertad Park.
The Santo Domingo convent was founded in 1551 and so was the San Francisco church twenty three years later. What is more, in 1625 La Merced convent was finally inaugurated. It was here that the struggle for Central America's independence began.
On the 5th November 1811 in this city started Central America's first independence movement and the official document was signed on September 1821 in the Town Council.
On the following year the Imperial Column, led by General Manuel Jose Arce, defeated the invader, after eight hours of bloody fighting in the battle of Mejicanos. Consequently, General Vicente Filisola took control of the city.
When the Mexican empire crumbled, Central America was constituted as a Federal Republic and El Salvador into one of its States. On June 12th, 1824, San Salvador became capital city of El Salvador State, putting up strong resistance to the siege laid by the federal army.
San Salvador was capital of the Central American Federation from 1834 at 1839. Unfortunately a severe earthquake destroyed it in April 16th, 1854.
