Chan Chan |
Chan Chan, word coming from the Muchik "Jang-Jang" which means "sun-sun", is the largest mud-brick citadel dating back to the pre-Hispanic era. It was built by the Chimú in Peru's north coast.
Chan Chan faces the sea in the Moche Valley, between Huancacho and Trujillo in the Region La Libertad and it was declared UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986.
Supposedly, it owes its name to the intense sun exposure the city had to bear. Its current name resulted from translations made by Spanish writers.
The archaeological site spans an area of about twenty square kilometers being the world's largest mud-brick citadel.

The House of Emancipation |
The Emancipation house or Madalengoitia house is the city's civic sanctuary since it was here that Trujillo's Mayor, the Marquis of Torre Tagle, who led the first separatist movement in 1820, proclaimed Peru's independence.
In the House of Emancipation, located at the corner of Pizarro and Gamarra Streets, a collection of watercolors from the XVIII century is still preserved. Cultural activities from art exhibitions to recitals and concerts are held regularly at this center.
Moreover, the first constitutional congress took place at this emblematic historic monument, which was also the house of government of president Jose de la Riva Agüero.
