Culture and Costumes of Ushuaia

The first historic testimonies of Ushuaia coincide with the incursions of the European navigators at the beginning of XIX century. The “Yámanas” were surprised by the Beagle ship crossing the water of the canal, after that, it was going to be called as the ship. Like this, started the contact with white people. After more than 6.000 years of living in the zone, the southern inhabitants of the earth started to receive European expeditions.

Nowadays, its origins, people, mystic and nature can be found in the dance, the ceramic, the paintings, art craft, theatre and photography that can be admired in cultural centers, spectacle Salas and in some occasion, outdoor events.

The Yamanas & the Alacalufes of Ushuaia

The Yamanas and the Alacalufes are the names of the ethnic groups that lived in the zone of Tierra del Fuego each one with its culture and particular costumes. Despite of living almost in the same place there meeting were really strange.

Both ethnics were known due to their ability for handcrafts something important to valuate because the fueguinos depended on and exclusively of the surrounding nature and they did not find any kind of shelter or help from other ethnics.

The Yamanas had their own language which was called yamanihasha. It is an audible and full of vocals language. Despite of the abundance of vocals, the Yamanas were not much conceptual; they did not understand abstract ideas taken out from a context of immediate application.

Many of their expressions were used to mark shade of meaning or difference of situation, to sum up the grammatical structure was basic.
